Local rector in Dundalk, Fr Michael Cusack, believes people out there could help the inquiry.

"Somebody knows who did this," he said.

"Certainly whoever it is, whoever perpetrated the act knows it themselves - but certainly there must be a wider family and connections around who will notice something very different about the person's behaviour.

"And they should really be cooperating with all of the forces to try and bring some semblance of justice."

Gardaí say they've yet to establish a motive for Mr Mulligan's killing - while officers are also liasing with the PSNI as part of the investigation.

Following forensic examinations last night the inquiry was upgraded to a murder investigation.
