A woman has been airlifted to hospital following a single-vehicle collision in Clare this afternoon.

There were two people in the car when it left the N68 Ennis to Kilrush road at Darragh at around 12.15pm.

The vehicle careered over a ditch into a field, before landing on its roof.

The woman was left trapped in the overturned car which came to a stop about 50 metres from the road.

Three units of the fire brigade, two ambulances and a rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis responded to the incident.

Paramedics requested assistance from the Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) air ambulance which landed in a nearby field.

While paramedics assessed and treated the injured driver, fire crews set about safely removing the trapped passenger.

The man was transported to hospital by road while his passenger was taken by air ambulance.
