Three Cork students win awards at EU Contest for Young Scientists

Three Cork students have won awards at the EU Contest for Young Scientists in Milan.

Eimear Murphy and Ian O'Sullivan from Coláiste Treasa in Kanturk won the Irish BT Young Scientist competition this year with their project, examining the effects that parental alcohol consumption can have on their adolescent children.

Today it won the Intel ISEF prize in Italy and the 17-year-olds will now travel to the United States next year to take part in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona.

16-year-old Mark O'Dowd, from Glanmire Community School in Cork, also claimed the Expo Milan 2015 prize.

His project found it is possible to improve crop yields by damaging crop seeds, under the principle of "what does not kill you makes you stronger".

He won a laptop and will take part in the closing ceremony of Expo 2015 in Milan next month.
