A four-year-old boy is fighting for his life after an accident at a hotel swimming pool in Co Cork.

The boy and his family were in the swimming pool at the Quality Hotel in Redbarn in East Cork when he got into difficulty.

It is understood a lifeguard carried out CPR before he was transferred to Cork University Hospital.

His condition has been described as critical.

The facility includes a 20-metre heated swimming pool and a children's play pool.

The three-star, 25-bedroom hotel is located at Redbarn Beach overlooking Youghal Bay approximately 5km east of the town.

The hotel was sold at auction earlier this year for €540,000.

Update 21.00:

The boy was transferred from Cork University Hospital to Templestreet Children's University Hospital in Dublin this evening.

A police source said that the injured boy is three-years-old.
