Almost 50% more flies around this year, says Rentokill

If you’ve been thinking lately that there are a lot more flies around than usual – you’re not the only one.

Rentokil says it has received more 47% call-outs about fly infestations in the first six months of 2015 compared to the same time period in 2013 and 2014.

The pest control firm said that recent warm weather and precipitation is contributing to the growth in fly numbers as they emerge from hibernation in search of food.

“Flies can be a common cause of food poisoning, particularly salmonella, and as such they create a real health risk around the home,” said Richard Faulkner, technical field consultant at Rentokil.

“If a small fly problem is left uncontrolled, it has the potential to turn into a serious infestation,”

“Some fly species are able to mature from eggs to adults in just seven to 10 days. Making just a few small changes around the home can protect you and your family from the nasty diseases that are spread by the common fly.”

The company said the highest number of fly infestation jobs so far in 2015 has been in Kerry - followed by Cork and Sligo.
