An appeal has been launched following the theft of 100 animals in Westmeath.

The 75 cattle and 25 sheep are said to be worth in the region of €100,000 to the farmer.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into the robbery - which occured near Kilbeggan between Wednesday night and the early hours of Thursday morning.

Chairman of the Irish Farmers Association's Livestock Committee Henry Burns has urged those involved to come forward.
