Ireland made 'discreet' IMF inquiry in 2008, says Cardiff

Ireland made a "discreet" inquiry with the IMF in 2008 about the possibility of being able to access a bailout, Kevin Cardiff said today.

The former secretary-general at the Department of Finance was giving evidence at the Banking Inquiry this afternoon.

He also said that the IMF approached Ireland in 2009 offering help if it was needed - but former Finance Minister Brian Lenihan ruled it out.

Mr Cardiff said it was sensible to know what backup arrangements were available in case the bank guarantee was not enough to calm investors.

"It certainly wasn't a plan, it was nobody's intention," he said.
