Gay teacher's right to work in religious schools to be voted on next week

TDs will be asked to vote next week on removing the rights of religious schools to discriminate against gay teachers.

A bill is being brought forward by the Anti-Austerity Alliance to remove the controversial clause under existing law known as Section 37.

Current law allows schools to give preference to some job applicants if it's deemed necessary to preserve their religious ethos - meaning gay teachers can be rejected by Catholic-run schools.

The government's already indicated its plans to repeal that law, but the opposition bill will be debated on Tuesday and voted on by Wednesday night.
