Teenage boy dies after Athlone swimming accident

A 14-year-old boy has died in hospital after a swimming accident in Athlone.

The teenager was swimming with friends in the River Shannon at about 6pm yesterday evening when he got into difficulty.

The alarm was raised and the Athlone Sub Aqua Club took him from the water.

He was transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin, where he was pronounced dead in the early hours of this morning.
