Teenager critical after being rescued from Shannon

A teenager is in a critical condition in hospital after getting into difficulty while swimming in Athlone.

The 14-year-old was in the River Shannon with his friends when he got into difficulty just before 6pm yesterday evening.

His friends called for the assistance of the Athlone Sub Aqua Club - who were on the water training at the time - and the teen was recovered quickly.

The boy was transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin last night and his condition is described as critical.
