Traffic restrictions in Dublin for Ireland v England match
Traffic restrictions are in place ahead of the Ireland v England match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin today.
Ireland take on England at 1pm. Kick off has been brought forward to minimise pre-match alcohol consumption, and a Garda cordon will be in place around the stadium.
Four hundred gardaà will be lining the streets as a precaution following the football riot at Lansdowne Road in 1995, which was instigated by an English hooligan faction.
Gardaà made 43 arrests on the night and 20 people were hospitalised.
The game at the then Lansdowne Road Stadium was called off by the referee after about 28 minutes of play, after a riot broke out in one of the stands when Ireland were one-nil up
The violence was widely condemned by representatives from both England and Ireland, after an investigation found that the rioting was started by some English fans who were unprovoked.
People interviewed on the streets of Dublin today said they hoped the added security around the Aviva would not be needed.
"Times have moved on a lot in 20 years, so I'd like to hope it won't be necessary," said one.
"It's good to have (the security) - better to be safe, but hopefully everyone can have a good game today and just enjoy it." said another.
