Minister: Judicial inquiry into Galvin's death 'in the public interest'

The Minister for Justice has said she is setting up a judicial inquiry into the death of Sergeant Michael Galvin "in the public interest".

The father of three had been investigated by GSOC and had been cleared of wrong-doing.

However, he was reportedly unaware of that at the time of his death at Ballyshannon Garda Station last week.

The judicial inquiry will replace the planned GSOC investigation into Sergeant Galvin's death.

Minister Frances Fitzgerald said she took all the circumstances into consideration before setting up a judicial inquiry.

"I felt it was in the public interest so the exact events can be examined and, if there are lessons to be learned, we can learn those," she said.
