Man's body found in River Shannon

The body of a Limerick man has been found in the River Shannon today.

The man has been identified as Nicky Lyons, who had been missing since Tuesday.

A fishing rod, a pen knife and a bicycle belonging to Mr Lyons were found near O'Dywer Bridge in the city where it is believed he had entered the water.

A crew from the Limerick Marine Search and Rescue Service (LMSRS) recovered the body at around 11.30am this morning near the Irish Cement Factory in Castlemungret, Limerick.

It was spotted floating on the river surface by two fishermen, who alerted the emergency services.

Three members of the LMSRS recovered the body and the man's remains were transported to the city morgue at University Hospital Limerick.

A post mortem will be carried to try to determine how the cause of death.
