A senior fire services official in Co Kerry has said it is a miracle that nobody was killed in a serious mountain blaze near Killarney last night.

A senior fire services official in Co Kerry has said it is a miracle that nobody was killed in a serious mountain blaze near Killarney last night.

The Assistant Chief Fire Officer Mike Flynn made the comments following the blaze which spread across 100 acres at the foot of Mangerton Mountain.

Dozens of fire personnel from all over Kerry battled the blaze from late last night to 6am this morning.

Gardaí have begun an investigation to establish the cause of the fire which is believed may have been started deliberately.
