'Shameless' Drumcondra shooting left man dead and 'put community at risk'
The fatal shooting of a man in north Dublin has left locals "in complete shock", a local councillor has said.
The man was found, shot dead, in Church Avenue in the Drumcondra area of the city at about 11.30am today.
Forensic teams have been called in. Witness reports said two burned-out cars were on the road near where the body was found.
Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern lives locally and visited the scene as investigations commenced into what is being classed as a gangland-style attack.
The two vehicles which were engulfed in flames were a car and a van.
The incident occurred a short distance from the Cat and Cage pub and the entrance to St Patrick’s College Drumcondra where thousands of students train to be teachers.
Paul McAuliffe, a councillor with Fianna Fáil, said the shooting threatened the safety of the entire local community.
“People have been left in complete shock by the shamelessness of this daylight shooting,” he said.
“Make no mistake – this was an attack that put the safety of the Drumcondra community, its residents, students and local construction workers at risk.
“While it appears that it was a targeted gang-style killing, we have heard of far too many incidents where innocent bystanders have been caught in the crossfire of such brutal attacks.”
