The Social Protection Minister Joan Burton is hoping to boost the ownership of private pensions.

Tánaiste Burton has set up an inter-departmental group to look at the introduction of a universal retirement savings scheme, on top of the state pension.

While Ireland has a relatively young population, by the year 2060, almost a quarter of the population will be over the age of 65.

Currently around half of workers are said to have pension.
