Motorists warned to take care on icy roads

Motorists are being advised to drive with care this morning as a snow and ice warning remains in place across Ireland.

Met Éireann is advising of wintry showers - with snow accumulations of up to 3 centimetres.

It says that the showers will be most frequent in the west and north and over hills and mountains.

The Status Yellow weather warning remains in effect until midday today.

The snow-ice warning is in place for for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath and Meath.

"The snow showers are going to continue, and it's probably going to be later on Thursday morning before they start to clear away," said Met Éireann forecaster Eoin Sherlock.

"Coupled with strong winds, that could produce some pretty poor driving conditions at times, so let's keep that in mind.

"So if any wet surfaces, any showers during the night, if they fall on a subzero surface, frost and ice will be likely to form. So there's a double threat there."
