An 18-year-old man has been arrested following an armed siege at a house in County Cork.

The incident began last night and went on into the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí were alerted to an incident at a house in Minane Bridge near Kinsale at around 10.30pm last night.

The area was sealed off and the Garda Regional Support unit were called to the scene after it emerged a man inside the house was armed with a shotgun.

A number of shots were fired from the house, however no one was injured. Armed gardaí from the Regional Support Unit and Garda Crisis Negotiators attended the scene and made contact with the 18-year-old.

A cordon was put in place and a neighbouring house was evacuated as a precaution. Two people from the house were removed to safety.

Shortly before 2.30am this morning, the 18-year-old man was found in a nearby outhouse by Gardaí. He was arrested and a loaded shotgun was recovered.

The man is being detained at Bandon garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

The scene is preserved for a technical examination and the investigation is ongoing.
