Tánaiste praises 'fair' Budget

The Tánaiste and Social Protection Minister has said the Budget announced today is fair.

Joan Burton said families, older people and low and middle-income workers would all benefit from the measures.

There will be no reductions in existing welfare payments and supports next year, while there will be a €5 increase in child benefit payments in 2015 and 2016.

25% of the Christmas bonus is also being restored as part of the package of measures.

The Tánaiste said Budget 2015 marked a decisive shift.

"The economy is growing, unemployment is falling and confidence is returning," she said. "The first phase of our recovery as a country is complete, and we're now starting the second - restoring living standards for families, older people and low- and middle-income workers."
