There have been 71 near misses involving Luas trams and pedestrians so far this year in Dublin.

Ahead of the launch of a new safety campaign this morning, pedestrians are being urged to be more aware of the Luas.

Managing director of Transdev, which operates the Luas, Brian Brennan said mobile phones and music players could cause distractions for pedestrians.

He said: "We're looking to focus on educating pedestrians about the importance of paying attention when crossing streets.

"We also want to show people the potential risks when they are distracted or in a hurry or not focused, (especially when they are) on mobile phones or listening to music."
