Almost 700 people were prosecuted for dodging fares and using fake travel passes last year.

New figures from the courts service show Irish Rail prosecuted 170 people while 142 were brought to court by Dublin Bus.

Luas operators Veolia prosecuted 174 people.

The statistics also show that 14,000 people were prosecuted for not paying their TV licence.
