FG member quits over McNulty Seanad nomination

One of the Fine Gael members overlooked for the Seanad nomination secured by John McNulty has resigned from the party.

Samantha Long had been suggested by Fine Gael's national executive as a potential candidate.

She said she doesn't agree with the protocols Fine Gael has in place for the election and the manner in which the issue has been handled.

I'm not long involved in politics, but I'm not politically naïve," she said. "I understand that when you look at the map ... you have to figure out where you're strategically poorly represented.

"But I think on this occasion with the lip-service that's been paid by all parties to getting more women into politics, I think that would have been a clear and visible signal for a woman to walk into the Seanad."
