PAC chair calls for new system to discover penalty points abuse

The chairman of the Public Accounts Committee says the Gardaí need new systems to detect abuse of the penalty points system.
John McGuinness said the most recent allegations of abuse show how the current setup isn't working.
Deputy McGuinness says the oversight methods need a total overhaul if penalty points are still being wrongly cancelled.
"The system simply is not working. We have to take into account the fact that after all of the hearings, after everything that was said, further reports were made to the commissioner in relation to the abuses that were taking place."
The committee is today considering its final report into the widespread cancellation of penalty points notices.
