Fatal stabbing at psychiatric hospital

Gardaí in Waterford are continuing to question a man in connection with a fatal stabbing last night.

A woman, believed to be in her early 50s, died after she was attacked on the grounds of St Otterans psychiatric hospital.

The HSE has confirmed that one person died, while another resident and staff suffered injuries.

A post mortem is due to be carried out on the woman's body later today.

Independent Councillor Mary Roche said it has come as a shock because St Otterans is based in a very quiet residential area.

"It's about a mile from the city centre [and] very quiet. I don't think I would have seen any incidents like this in the past," she said.

"The hospital has been there as long as anyone in the city can remember, and there hasn't been anything like this that happened there before."
