The company has today told employees about the proposals to close its call centre and support operation at Carrick-on-Shannon at the end of November, leading to the loss of 160 full-time roles.

The jobs are at MBNA in Carrick-on-Shannon, which is a subsidiary of Bank of America.

Jobs at Avant Card in Carrick-on-Shannon are not affected.

All MBNA UK business will now be conducted via its Chester call centre in the UK.

MBNA said the proposal follows a comprehensive review of its customer contact centre operations in the UK and Ireland.

Its chief executive Ian O’Doherty said their business is now UK-focused and serves UK customers, so they are proposing to align their resources to the market in which they operate.

Their comprehensive review looked at a number of potential options for the Carrick-on-Shannon operation, including its potential sale to a third party.

The company said this was regrettably not achievable and so they are proposing to close the operation.
