There are claims Ireland will be seen as a laughing stock for failing to protect the Moore Street site of the 1916 Rising.

Independent TD Maureen O'Sullivan said it will be dwarfed by either a derelict site or a massive shopping centre for the centenary celebrations, unless the government intervenes.

The Dublin deputy claims there is not enough legislation in place to guard heritage buildings, and is calling for a new bill to put planning restrictions on surrounding land.

The Housing Minister Jan O'Sullivan, however, has insisted authorities have enough power to protect architectural conservation areas.
