Counting under way in Monaghan election

Counting is under way in the Monaghan local election that was cancelled last month.

The vote in the Ballybay-Clones area was postponed after the sudden death of the Fine Gael candidate Owen Bannigan.

Six councillors will be selected in the election, from a pool of 11 candidates. Final results are expected to be known by 6pm this evening.

The Monaghan Co Council is waiting on the results from the area to determine its final make-up. Currently, the council has five Sinn Féin councillors, three Fianna Fáil, and two each of Fine Gael and Independents.
