Elderly man in serious condition in hospital after assault

A man in his 70s is in hospital after an assault in Co Donegal last night.

The 73-year-old man was assaulted in Convent Road, Carndonagh, at around 9.30pm last night and was taken by ambulance to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry where his condition is being described as serious.

Gardaí, who are appealing for witnesses, arrested a man in his 30s in connection with the incident.

He is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Buncrana Garda Station.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination.
