'Ease off, and get there alive': Almost 500 caught speeding today

Nearly 500 people have been caught speeding today as part of Operation Slow Down.

With the June Bank Holiday weekend traditionally a very dangerous time on the roads, the Gardaí are warning motorists to drive within the speed limits.

During the first five and a half hours of the operation, 22,000 cars were checked.

The highest speed detected so far was a car travelling 128kms in a 100km zone on the N7.

The Road Safety Authority is also urging people to slow down as the bank holiday exodus gets underway.

Chief executive Moyagh Murdock said: "The message is to ease off, and get there alive."
