Female TDs celebrate by-election victories

The Dáil has two new women TDs following the by-elections in Longford-Westmeath and Dublin-West.

Gabrielle McFadden of Fine Gael comfortably took the seat that became vacant after the death of her sister Nicky McFadden from motor neuron disease last March.

Ruth Coppinger from the Socialist Party was elected on the sixth count in Dublin-West.

Both candidates who will take up their seats next week say they are delighted.

"We're just delighted that we kept this seat for the left and socialism, so thrilled...it hasn't really sunk in" Coppinger said.

"I'm delighted, I'm obviously delighted," said " McFadden said.

"It is very emotional and I'm very upset and lonely for Nicky - but I'm very really delighted. An I'm very honoured and grateful to Longford-Westmeath for giving me this chance and I promise I won't let them down."
