Cabinet to consider proposal on transgender people's identity

A proposal is being brought to Cabinet tomorrow which would recognise transgender people's new identity at the age of 16.

A new bill is already in the works which will allow over 18's to apply for a gender recognition certificate that allows their status to be recognised by the State.

He or she would then be able to apply for a new birth certificate covering their acquired gender.

The Children's Ombudsman and the Oireachtas Children's Committee have already recommended the age limit of 18 be lowered.

It is reported today the new proposals say it should be brought down, but parental consent would be required for people between the ages of 16 and 18.
