Direct Democracy founder and leader resigns

The leader of Direct Democracy Ireland has resigned for personal reasons.

Ben Gilroy, who was also one of the party's founders, stepped down over the weekend.

Mr Gilroy was best known for finishing fourth in last year's by-election in Meath East, pushing Labour's candidate into fifth place.

He has been replaced as party leader by Jaan Van de Ven.
