Eamon Malony, Labour TD for Dublin South West, said it was insulting that a judge would make such comments, and called for an apology.

"I think it's regrettable that any judge would make a judgement about an entire community which he obviously knows very little about," he said.

"It's very insensitive and I don’t know what his purpose was in making these remarks in the first place. I feel strongly...that he should withdraw these remarks, and apologise."
