Two investigations launched into death of three-year-old in Galway lift shaft

The three-year-old boy who died in a lift shaft in Galway yesterday has been named locally as Solomon Soremekun.

At about 3pm yesterday, he became separated from his Nigerian-born mother and two other siblings and entered a lift shaft in the three-storey Hynes Building on Augustine Street.

He became trapped and suffered fatal injuries.

A post mortem will be carried out at Galway University Hospital today on his body.

Two units of the Galway Fire Brigade, an ambulance and the gardaí were called to the scene, but Solomon died there.

The scene has been preserved today pending further technical investigations.

Two separate investigations have been launched by the Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority into how the boy could have gained access to the lift shaft.
