Abortion law 'haphazard and unsatisfactory', says College of Psychiatrists

The College of Psychiatrists has advised its members not to take part in assessments of pregnant women concerned about suicidal ideation, under the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act.

The body has described the Act as "very haphazard and unsatisfactory", arguing that some medical professionals haven't been given clear guidelines.

The new abortion legislation, which came into operation on January 1, sets out the circumstances under which a woman can legally obtain an abortion in Ireland.
