Ambulance Service apologises to family of Cork toddler

The National Ambulance Service has apologised to the family of a Cork toddler, who died after an ambulance being sent to him was stood down.

Two-year-old Vakaris Martinitis died from injuries sustained after he fell from an upstairs window at his home in Midleton in May this year.

Speaking to Cork's RedFM, the medical director of the National Ambulance Service Dr Cathal O'Donnell said that an ambulance should have been sent.

"What happened should not have happened," he said.

"We have fully accepted that, and I have apologised on behalf of the National Ambulance Service to the family, because at the end of the day our responsibility is if a member of the public dials 999, we will send an emergency ambulance every time - every time.

"That did not happen on this occasion, and it should have happened."
