Emergency services destroy chemicals at Shannon

Gardaí, fire personnel and the Army Bomb Disposal Team have taken part in an operation in Shannon, Co Clare this morning which saw a quantity of chemicals destroyed.

The pre-planned operation at the Smithstown Industrial Estate began at around 7:00, after the company concerned had called for assistance.

The substances were removed and transferred to a quarry in nearby Bunratty where they were rendered safe by the Army Bomb Disposal Unit, which deals with unstable chemicals.

Gardaí say there was no threat to public safety and that their work was carried out early this morning so as to minimise disruption.
