Jack and Jill founder calls for audit of charitable sector

The founder and CEO of a well known Irish charity is calling for an urgent audit of charity funding.

Jonathan Irwin of the Jack and Jill Foundation said he is bitterly disappointed at the revelations and is calling for an audit and regulation for the charitable sector:

"We've got to have an audit," he said. "Nobody seems to realise that the Govenrment gives over €4bn to domestic not-for-profits, and nobody knows anything about it."

"Nobody polices it in Leinster House. I think it's the Wild West – where is the regulator? We've got to have a regulator. At the moment, there's virtually no laws at all. It's like being in dodge city."

Mr Irwin's comments follow revelations that the Central Remedial Clinic topped up its CEO salary with money raised by the Friends and Supporters of the clinic.

It's thought further cases will emerge in coming days.
