Dublin mayor proposes monthly 'car-free' Sunday

Plans are in the pipeline to make part of Dublin city centre car free on one Sunday every month.

The zone would extend from Dawson Street over as far as George's Street.

It is aimed at making the city more family friendly and give retailers a boost in footfall.

"The idea is to make the city centre more attractive for people to come in," Lord Mayor Oisín Quinn said.

"It'd be on a Sunday between about 11 o'clock in the morning and 5 o'clock so that people going to work could get ion before the restrictions and get home after them, and (so that) deliveries could occur".

"A lot of other cities have tried this in Europe and in Central and South America and it's been hugely successful" he added.
