It is understood the man was reported missing around 12.30 this afternoon.

The man aged in his mid 50s set off from Kilmore Quay early this morning for a day of Lobster fishing.

The alarm was raised when his boat was found near the Saltee Islands shortly before lunchtime.

The RNLI liftboat from Kilmore Quay was launched, and along with the Search and Rescue helicopter from Waterford - a search is now underway for the man who is thought to have more than 30 years' experience at sea.

Sea conditions are said to be very calm in the south-east with good visibility.

More than a dozen fishing boats are also taking part in the search.
