Howlin: other departments will have to pay for health and gardaí overruns

The Minister for Public Expenditure said other departments will be used to fund bailouts in the departments of Health and Justice.

Justice Minister Alan Shatter has been given €32m extra to pay for Garda wages and the first Magdalene survivor payments.

Meanwhile, Minister James Reilly could yet need as much as €200m to fund the HSE this year.

In the Dáil today, however, Brendan Howlin said these adjustments will have to be funded through savings from other Ministers.

"It is anticipated that any overruns in health and justice will be met from saving elsewhere across government, and will not have a negative impact on the government's aggregate end-year expenditure."

He said his department was working with the Department of Health to estimate the level of funding that would be needed.
