Any computer security can be breached, expert claims

A leading expert in cyber crime says criminal organisations could breach most security systems, no matter how sophisticated they are.

It comes after a major security breach at Loyalty Build, which accessed the personal details of 80,000 Supervalu and Axa customers.

The Chief Technology Officer at Mandiant, Dave Merkel, says sophisticated criminal gangs can breach most security if they're determined enough.

It could be poor security controls, [or] it could be an attacker just focused enough on what that company had."

"If you had … a criminal organisation that's that focused, at the end of the day, they're going to be successful."

The Garda Fraud Squad is now investigating the Loyalty Build breach, which may also affect hundreds of customers at Clerys, Centra, Stena Line and Postbank.
