Women forced to go to UK for abortion to take cases to the UN

Three Irish women who had to travel for an abortion after being told their babies would not survive outside the womb are taking their cases to the UN.

The Terminations for Medical Reasons group say having to travel in cases of fatal foetal abnormality amounts to cruel and degrading treatment.

They are being supported by the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights who say Irish women are being abandoned by the State.

TMR Spokesperson Ruth Bowie says having to travel for a devastating termination was the worst thing she has ever experienced.

"Myself and my husband had to go over to a city that we didn't know - we had to leave our family and friends - we had to go to a strange clinic, we were treated like we were on a conveyor belt, and then we had to walk around a city that we didn't know for hours and hours waiting for our flight back," she said.

"It was just absolutely the most horrendous experience of our life," she added.

The group will file a petition with the UN in Geneva today.
