School principals welcome €70m school funding

The Irish Primary Principals Network has welcomed funding worth around €70m to carry out improvement works at schools across Ireland is welcome news.

Some €28m will be paid out to primary schools in the coming weeks for small repair works.

A further €40m is being made available under the Summer Works programme for next year to allow schools to carryout building works and structural improvements.

Larry Fleming, PRO of the Irish Primary Principals Network, says the allocation will help schools in many ways.

"It'll allow schools to do basic repairs, to windows and doors, leaking roofs, or possibly update toilet facilities, and indeed any works [on facilities] that are considered a health and safety hazard within the school," he said.

"So it's very, very important."
