Cootehill murder accused remanded

A 28-year-old student charged with the murder of archaeologist Emmet Connolly who died following a stabbing in Cootehill in Cavan has yet to take up bail.

Mr Connolly, 32, from Rockcorry, Co Monaghan had recently returned to Ireland after spending 18 months in Australia and had been socialising in Cootehill on Saturday, September 28 when he went to a house at Lodge View estate.

His body was found at the house in the early hours the following morning.

The following day, father-of-three Kevin Moran, who is originally from Dublin but has an address at Lodge View, Cootehill, “made no reply” when he was charged with the murder of Mr Connolly.

He had been remanded in custody and Mr Moran, who earns €290 a week from taking part in a Fetac sports course, faced his third hearing today when he appeared before Judge Grainne Malone at Cloverhill District Court.

The student, who has not yet indicated how he intends to plead, was further remanded in custody with consent to High Court bail which he is yet to take up.

He will face his next hearing via-video-link at Cloverhill District Court on November 13 next.
