Seanad vote can be extended to all 'straight away', Power claims

Legislation is almost ready that would allow every Irish citizen the right to vote in Seanad elections, Fianna Fáil Senator Averil Power has claimed.

On Friday the country took to the polls to reject the Government's proposal to abolish the Upper House.

In the aftermath of that decision attention is now turning towards Senate reform.

Averil Power says some changes could happen immediately :

"We can change the voting system straight away … [new laws] are ready to be enacted."

"That would allow for every citizen to have a vote, and I think that should be done straight away."
