Teen who attacked garda 'blatantly broke bail conditions'

A 15-year-old Dublin boy, who attacked a garda after drinking two litres of Vodka, has been remanded in custody today.

The boy, who went on a binge before the incident last June, had been remanded in custody by Judge John O'Connor at the Dublin Children's Court on September 4 last for repeatedly breaking his bail terms.

During the a courtroom tantrum at that hearing, the schoolboy lost his temper, and had shouted “f***” before he kicked the witness box after which he stood up, grasped his chair with both hands and raised it over his head.

Gardaí restrained the teenager who was just a few feet away from the judge but did not manage to throw the chair.

After spending three weeks in custody on remand, Judge O'Connor last week agreed to readmit him to conditional bail.

However, at his latest hearing, the court heard that over the past four days the boy had again broken his bail terms which included a curfew to be in his home each night.

He had also been told to sign on regularly at his local garda station, to go to school, attend drug testing and to stay out of a number of districts in north Dublin.

The juvenile court heard that the boy, who was accompanied to court by his mother, had blatantly broken the curfew condition.

Following garda objections to bail the teenager was remanded back into custody and will appear again next week.

A pre-sanction probation report has been sought in relation to the boy who has admitted throwing missiles, criminal damage to a garda car's bumper and roof, breach of the peace and being intoxicated in public to such an extent he was a danger to himself and others during an incident in June.

He has also pleaded guilty to engaging in violent behaviour in a north Dublin garda station and assaulting an officer there following his arrest.

He has also admitted possessing bolt cutters for use in a theft, trespassing and motor theft.

Earlier Garda Sergeant Seamus Treacy had told the juvenile court that in the early hours of June 16 an incident involving a number of people started to get out of control.

Gda Sgt Treacy had said the boy “had consumed two litres of vodka”, was assaulting gardaí and spitting at them, and had to be restrained. He woke up the next morning in a garda station cell and” did not know where he was and what had occurred the night before”.
