Ring defends Kenny's decision to dodge debates

The Taoiseach's constituency colleague Michael Ring has defended Enda Kenny's refusal to debate the Seanad referendum.

In a televised debate on RTÉ's Prime Time last night, Fine Gael put forward Minister Richard Bruton to call on voters to scrap the Upper House - a move which has been criticised by opponents, who say the Taoiseach should stand over his own plan.

A second television debate will take place on TV this evening with Enda Kenny once again not taking part.

Junior Minister Ring said the Taoiseach is entitled to skip the debates.

"The Taoiseach made that decision and is quite correct," he said.

"Richard Bruton is quite capable and did very well last night.

"The Taoiseach is the Taoiseach. (He is) the leader of the country and he's doing an excellent job."
