Man charged over burglary with machete in Waterford

A man has been remanded in custody at Waterford District Court charged with aggravated burglary in relation to an incident in which a house was broken into by a suspect carrying a machete sword.

29-year-old father of four Andrew Halligan of 46 Ardmore Park, Ballybeg, has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Giving evidence in court before Judge Angus McCarthy, Garda Gerard Griffin said Gardaí allege they received a call out from a person in a house, who said there was a man there with a machete and the occupants had barricaded themselves in a bedroom.

The court heard it's alleged Gardaí pursued the man but they didn't arrest him in fear of their own safety.

Mr Halligan has been refused bail by Judge McCarthy. He will appear before Waterford District court again next Tuesday.
