Gas price hike will hurt the elderly, support group claims

Bord Gáis is under fire this morning from elderly support groups, who say their bid to increase gas prices by 7% could be potentially dangerous for the older generation.

The Commission for Energy Regulation said it has received a request to approve an increase from the start of October.

The regulator will decide on the price hike request later this month.

"Older people have a greater need for heat than other sections of society, and they are struggling in a very serious way," said Eamon Timmons of Age Action.

"This will only add further hardship … the Government has to act to live up to its commitment to protect vulnerable people."
